In 1988, Somiedo has been declared Natural Park.
Somiedo Natural Park is the protected area that represents best the natural and ethnographic values of the mountains of Asturias
The Somiedo Natural Park has been declared Biosphere Reservation by UNESCO in 2000. A classification awarded to places where biodiversity preservation is harmonised with the safeguarding of cultural values and the sustainable use of natural resources.
This asturian district is truly exceptional and unique in terms of nature.
Somiedo natural heritage has been preserved in harmony with ancestral systems of farming.
Thatched huts are the most typical expression of traditional farming.
The 29 000 hectares of Somiedo Natural Park is divided by four rivers which names the four main valleys of Somiedo: Saliencia, Somiedo, Pigueña y Valle.
The 1200 inhabitants of Somiedo is divided in 30 villages and two small towns. Among them only three villages can boast as many as one hundred inhabitants.
Most people live on traditional live stock farming.
The main town is Pola de Somiedo.
